Information about the upcoming Bloody Mary book

If you liked this site's article about the legend of Bloody Mary, the spirit in a mirror who has become the focus of many wildly different children's stories and games, you'll love the upcoming book being published by author Dan Norder.

This book will be called The Face in The Mirror - Reflections on the Legend of Bloody Mary and will be available to order on this website, in bookstores and at online sites such as Amazon.com. The cover illustration is by Naomi Nowak, an up-and-coming artist in Sweden who also did some translation work for research into the Svarte Madame variant of the legend. (If you are interested, you can check to see if she currently has any original artwork for sale on eBay.)

The book goes into much greater detail about most of the content in the original article. Here is a partial list of just some of the topics that will be covered:

  • Book cover imageThe influence of the Salem Witch Trials.
  • Other children's games involving mirrors.
  • Tracking down claims that Mary Worth was a witch who lived in Illinois.
  • The Jewish demoness Lilith as a mirror spirit.
  • Mexico's Wailing Woman La Llorona, her origins and her influence on the legends.
  • The location of the Black Aggie statue featured in one of the variations of the story's theme.
  • More on Spain's seance and ouija spirit Veronica, including theories on her origin and relationship to the mirror spirit folklore.
  • Examining the psychoanalytic interpretation of the legend.
  • Medieval warnings about the use of mirrors.
  • Stories of the Virgin Mary as an apparition, and sometimes as a demon.
  • The Blue Baby legends.
  • How fictional books and movies influenced and copied the legends.
  • A real life killer named Mary who had her own children's rhyme and ritual.

The information in this book comes from more than 500 different variants of the legend collected by the author as well as years of research into related themes.
